Young Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham suffered in my first save for not getting enough first team football, and my backroom staff let me know his stats weren’t progressing as they should be as a result.

Traditionally, keeping tabs on your potential wonderkids has been one of the fiddlier and less enjoyable aspects of the job, too often leaving you stumped as to why the 16 year-old you'd pegged as the Bolivian Messi has a stats screen full of downward arrows.Ģ1 Images The Development Centre doesn’t ensure those promising kids all become world-beaters, but at a glance it’s at least apparent why they’re not flourishing. Top of the pile is the Development Centre, essentially a new menu which aggregates all the useful info you’d want to know about your young players in your organisation’s youth squads. That’s not to cast its new additions to the side altogether, though. Like a great impressionist painter, Football Manager 2020 captures the whole ecosystem of the sport using an email inbox, some menus, and a match engine that, yes, still looks more like Virtua Striker than FIFA. Instead, players are drawn into its intoxicating spreadsheets and carefully simulated calf strains by the things that don’t change: the astounding depth of its player database, the attention to detail in every aspect of its dutiful recreation of the football world. Nobody’s enticed into a new Football Manager game by its new features, however useful or profound they might be. If you set everything right, you’ll get a fantastically balanced tactic with hard defense and ferocious attack. The easiest explanation for its form would be the new features it includes, but that isn’t quite right. In the back two inverted wingbacks and two ball-playing defenders, with a sweeper keeper behind them. This kind of midfield will defend in line and transform fantastically into deadly attack when retaken possession. Make sure that this is top-class player and you will benefit massively from this tactic.īehind attacking duo there are four players in line: on wide positions two wingers with attacking duties, and in the middle a central midfielder with attacking duty and a deep lying playmaker in supporting role. Operating behind him, will be the most important player of this formation in the role of attacking midfielder with support duty. Powerful forward is also ok as an option but with advanced forward ability you’ll get more options upfront. You will have great defensive block in the back, and furious transformation when attacking.įirst of all you will want to put an advanced forward upfront. This may not be the best tactic on FM20 but it’s certainly the most balanced one. And finally the ball-playing sweeper keeper.

Since the forwards are going to press a lot when out of possession, you’ll need very good wing backs to cover the sides. You’ll have 4 in the back, with wing backs in a more attacking role, and two center backs. He’ll help in the back but also create attacks from the back.

Behind these two you have a deep lying playmaker.

The next role in the middle is advanced playmaker (dribbling, creativity and long shots are important for this role). In the middle you will want one good box-to-box midfielder, who’s going to run a lot up and down the field. It’s up to you to choose sides in this that best suits your squad, and you can even change sides of these players during the season or even during the match. On the sides you have one inverted forward that cuts inside, on the other a winger. In offense, you’ll need a complete forward, a really good attacker with both strength and finishing abilities (think of Harry Kane). If you like short passing and slower play this one is for you.
